Wu Zetian is the only female emperor in Chinese history, known for her extraordinary political talent and courage during her reign. However, a puzzling aspect of her legacy is the blank stele she left in front of Qianling Mausoleum, the reasons for which remain a mystery to this day. The blank stele is located on the eastern side of Qianling, contrasting sharply with the "Stele of Saintly Declarations" dedicated to Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi. There are various theories regarding the origins of the blank stele: some believe that Wu Zetian felt her achievements could not be fully expressed in words; others suggest she felt guilty in her later years and did not want to erect a stele for herself; and some propose that the original inscription existed but was erased for political reasons. These interpretations reflect the complex character of this female emperor.
