Empress Xiaozhuang, originally named Borjigit Bumubutai, was a consort of the Qing Dynasty's founding emperor, Nurhaci. She not only assisted three emperors but also played a crucial role in the political struggles during the early Qing period. A mysterious legend surrounds her relationship with Dorgon, suggesting that Empress Xiaozhuang married him. This story became a popular topic of discussion among the people during the early Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, lasting over 300 years.
In 1642, Empress Xiaozhuang used her beauty and intelligence to successfully persuade the Ming general Hong Chengchou to surrender to the Qing. The same year, Nurhaci passed away, leading to fierce competition for the throne. Through various means, Empress Xiaozhuang managed to have her 6-year-old son, Fulin, ascend as the Shunzhi Emperor. Dorgon, as the regent, held significant power in the court. To prevent Dorgon from posing a threat to the young emperor, rumors circulated that Empress Xiaozhuang, in a bid to protect her son's throne, even 'lowered herself' to marry Dorgon. However, this claim is not found in official historical records, and many scholars remain skeptical of it.
Nonetheless, there are indeed some ambiguities regarding the relationship between Empress Xiaozhuang and Dorgon. For instance, Dorgon was seen within the palace, raising suspicions about his connection with Empress Xiaozhuang. Additionally, after his death, Dorgon was posthumously honored as Emperor Chengzong Yi, suggesting he may have held a special status. Empress Xiaozhuang's dying wish not to be buried with Nurhaci also hints at a unique relationship between her and Dorgon.
