In the late Qing Dynasty, a type of traditional Chinese medicine known as 'dragon bones' gained popularity in apothecaries for treating various ailments. However, these seemingly ordinary dragon bones conceal a significant historical and cultural mystery. It wasn't until 1899 that a scholar named Wang Yirong accidentally discovered inscriptions on the dragon bones, unveiling the truth—these bones were actually oracle bones dating back over three thousand years to the Shang Dynasty. Wang Yirong purchased these oracle bones at a high price, saving them from being destroyed as medicinal materials, thus opening a new chapter in the study of oracle bones.
The discovery of oracle bones not only filled in gaps in the historical record of the Shang Dynasty but also revealed various aspects of life during that period. From agriculture and animal husbandry to astronomy and medicine, oracle bones provide us with a detailed historical panorama. Although the interpretation of oracle bones is still ongoing and many mysteries remain unsolved, they undoubtedly represent a significant milestone in the history of Chinese writing.
