Cyrus was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire in ancient Persia. He conquered regions in West and Central Asia, establishing the Persian Empire. However, the cause of his death remains a historical mystery. According to Herodotus, Cyrus died in battle against the Massagetae tribe. Yet, other classical writers provide different accounts. Some suggest he was mortally wounded while fighting the Scythians or the Derbikes, while others claim he died at home. The tomb of Cyrus in Pasargadae adds to the complexity of this enigma. Modern scholars express skepticism towards Herodotus's account, but Soviet scholar Dandamayev tends to support Herodotus's version. The cause of Cyrus's death remains an unsolved mystery to this day.
