The question of whether Jesus was human or divine has sparked a debate within Christianity that has lasted for over a thousand years. Was Jesus truly the 'Savior' or a 'deity,' or merely an idol created by Christians? This question continues to perplex scholars and believers alike.
Those who argue that Jesus was human contend that he was an ordinary man from Nazareth in 1st century Palestine, later revered by Christians as 'God' or the 'Christ.' In contrast, skeptics assert that Jesus may not have existed historically at all, but rather is a fictional character. They point out that many of the legends about Jesus in the Bible lack historical evidence and may have been fabricated by later generations.
Over the years, scientific research has suggested that many stories in the Bible could be fictional. To date, no historical documents have been found that confirm Jesus as a real historical figure. During the time Jesus lived, there are almost no mentions of his life or the founding of Christianity in various historical writings. The gospels that recount Jesus's story were published long after Christianity emerged. Different denominations wrote various gospels for their own interests, depicting different versions of the 'Savior.' For instance, there are discrepancies in the genealogies of Jesus found in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, and even within the same Gospel of Matthew, descriptions of Jesus are contradictory. This indicates that the image of Jesus may resemble more of a 'divine savior' crafted by Christians.
As time progressed, Christianity evolved from Judaism, and early Christians were predominantly Jewish. Therefore, the accounts of Jesus in the gospels were influenced by Jewish traditions. The Gospel of Matthew describes Jesus as a descendant of the Jewish nation, giving him a legitimate identity. However, as Christianity spread, the image of Jesus gradually transformed into the 'Savior' for people around the world. To accommodate this shift, the authors of the gospels had to fabricate the story of 'the Virgin Mary becoming pregnant through the Holy Spirit before marriage.' This narrative clearly contradicts the contemporary understanding of God's purity.
Is Jesus human or divine? The answer remains elusive.
