The authorship of the last 40 chapters of "Dream of the Red Chamber," one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, has long been a topic of debate. For many years, it has been widely believed that these chapters were written by Gao E, a Qing dynasty scholar. However, as research has progressed, an increasing number of scholars have begun to question this view. The notion that Gao E wrote the last 40 chapters was first proposed by Hu Shi, who argued that Gao E composed them based on his own preferences and the political context of the time. Nevertheless, several experts in the study of "Dream of the Red Chamber" have found the likelihood of Gao E being the author to be extremely low. Firstly, considering Gao E's life, it seems implausible that he could have dedicated significant time to writing these chapters while pursuing his career. Additionally, existing evidence suggests that the conclusion of "Dream of the Red Chamber" was not penned by Gao E but rather by someone else. Currently, some scholars believe that all 120 chapters of "Dream of the Red Chamber" were written solely by Cao Xueqin, and the various versions that have survived to this day were transcribed by different individuals based on Cao's manuscripts.
